How can we sleep well ? Which direction should we sleep in ? Do we need to sleep with our head facing East, West, North or South ?
Have we ever considered our relationship with the Earth — whether it be our circadian rhythms, day-night cycles, the influence of gravity on our bodies, or how Earth's magnetic field impacts us depending on which way our heads are pointed when we sleep? Do we have to turn our head to the East, West, North, or South when we sleep ?
Energy flows through our bodies in certain patterns because our bodies are formed of energy. Our energy flow alters and becomes more relaxed when we sleep. If our heads are facing in the wrong direction, it can obstruct the flow of energy, cause blood pressure and even cause insomnia. You may have noticed that on occasions, despite getting 8 to 9 hours of sleep, you still feel exhausted when you wake up. This can be the result of our improper sleeping direction. We can obtain a deep sleep, a restful sleep and an unobstructed energy flow when we sleep with our heads in the appropriate direction.
What is the correct direction for the head to face ?
Numerous ancient cultures, including Indian science of Vastu Shastra and currently supported by science, have long believed that the direction, we sleep in, affects the general quality of our sleep and health. Vastu is an ancient Indian tradition that believes the way you arrange your environment has an impact on the quality of your life. Since our bodies have magnetic poles much like our planet Earth does, a scientific research has shown that electromagnetic energy of the earth has a direct impact on our body’s energy.
How does Earth impact our body ?
Much like a compass, Earth is a magnet and the strongest one known to mankind and this is because the core of the Earth is made up of hot, molten iron. Consider a typical human body contains 4 to 5 grams of iron, most of which is found in the blood. Similar to a magnet our bodies have north and south polarities, our head represents the north pole and the feet, the south pole.
Should we sleep with our head facing North?
Vastu Shastra advises against sleeping with your head toward the North. When we sleep facing North, this magnetic pull attracts the iron present in the blood and as a result more blood gets accumulated in the brain. Sleeping with your head pointing North can also disrupt your blood circulation, cause headaches and lead to disturbed sleep. Per ancient Indian phylosophy "Only dead people sleep facing north." This is why sleeping with your head in the North is considered to be a worst-case scenario.
Should we sleep with our head facing East?
If you want to establish a more tranquil and balanced environment for sleep, keeping your head towards the East is considered to be a favorable direction in Vastu Shastra since it boosts vigor and improves memory. Moreover, it is good to take advantage of the rising Sun, a free source of natural energy that can improve your mood and general well-being. The important thing is that the setting in which you sleep should be tranquil. If you are unable to control the level of noise in your surroundings, use a white noise machine, earplugs, or headphones to block out annoying noises.
Should we sleep with our head facing West?
According to Vastu, sleeping with your head directed West could disrupt your sleep and make it less restful. The Sun sets in the West, which is a bad direction to sleep in, since it can become a cause of laziness, agitation, and a sense of dissatisfaction in the person.
Should we sleep with our head facing South?
According to Vastu, it's best to sleep with your head pointing South. You could discover that getting a better night's sleep is aided by sleeping with your head towards the South. This is regarded as the ideal sleeping position. Sleeping in this position not only lowers the blood pressure and promote positive energy but also helps in inducing deep and restful sleep by lining up the body appropriately with Earth's magnetic field.
The South is thought to be the direction of the Sun and is considered to be the healthiest. Additionally, it has been discovered that those who sleep in this position have the reduced levels of stress hormone Cortisol. As stress and anxiety are thought to be brought on by Cortisol, sleeping with your head to the South can assist to lessen these symptoms. In addition, sleeping with your head in this direction helps you align with the direction of the Sun.
Lord Krishna, in Mahabharata has rightly advised Yudhisthira to sleep with his head towards the South and legs towards the North.
